MEMBERS SPEAK OUT
STRIKE FUND, MANDATORY CHECK OFF
APPROVED AT MARCH MEETING

The members of Local 814 voted at the March General Membership Meeting to enact two fundamental programs to help keep the union strong.

The first was the overwhelming approval to establish a Strike Fund for the Moving & Storage and New Furniture sectors of the local. Each member will contribute a nickel an hour for up to forty hours worked per week; the maximum weekly contribution will be $2 per member per week. In addition, delinquencies will be treated just as if it were dues or assessments, SO IF YOU FALL THREE MONTHS BEHIND, YOU ARE NO LONGER A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING!!!

n the subject of members in good standing, the members also passed a bylaw requiring any member on a Seniority List to sign up for mandatory dues check off. It had come to the attention of the Executive Board that of the members not having paid their monthly dues, an extremely large number were Seniority List Employees. Besides the fact that over 90% of members on a List are already on check off. Therefore, any and every Seniority List Employee in Local 814 MUST SIGN UP FOR DUES CHECK OFF!!! And for those who are still behind in their dues/assessments, they have to pay this separately before risking suspension.

WE SEE “SIGNS” OF THE WEATHER CHANGING
EXPECT LOCAL 814’S STREET PRESENCE TO INCREASE IN 2008

Spring is in the air and the baseball season is fully underway. But there’s another season that will soon kick itself off: PICKET SEASON. The executive board of Local 814 will continue to work hard to find worksites in our jurisdiction that have chosen to go with a non-814 company. That choice will prove to be one that comes back to bite them in the ass. We will fight harder than ever to preserve the wages and benefits that we have earned since before the Great Depression. If you see a scab moving company at any major commercial site in the city, let us know. You can call the Union Hall at (718) 392-4510 anytime 9 am to 5 pm, Monday thru Friday, except on Holidays. Together we can make a difference!

The American Way is not the 814 WAY!

For the second week in a row, members of Local 814 engaged in an informational hand-billing campaign against the substandard competition. This time, we decided to aim our efforts at American Storage Transport, This company had been witnessed doing new furniture delivery at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. How credible is this info? We got the intel from the BIMC Security Guards…FELLOW 814 MEMBERS!

After the leaflets had started to be passed out, we found out that low-and-behold, AMERICAN WAS IN THE BUILDING! Former President Bob Corbett didn’t waste any time in making the trip from the Union Hall with picket signs and, for the first time in almost two years, THE UNION RAT! We were able to begin informational picketing in front of the 16th Street entrance. Soon after, the rat had been inflated fully, and the line was moving. The response was almost instantaneous. American’s truck pulled out and we were told they would not be back in BIMC. This was a tremendous victory for the union, and we’re not done yet…

Show your Union Pride on the 25th. We will be located at 70 Pine Street, where AIG has been using substandard movers for quite sometime. We hope to make it 3-for-3 this year in our efforts against substandard wages and benefits.

814 FUNDS WEBSITE UP AND RUNNING; VACATION CLOCK TICKING

Following in the lead of the union, the Local 814 Welfare, Pension and Annuity Funds have launched a website of their own. You can find the link on the left side of the page, or go to www.teamsterslocal814wpa.org. The Funds website has just about any information you might need access to and should answer most if not all questions you might have. In addition, contact info for the proper person in each department is contained, as well as a copy of the latest 814 Newsletter, which will be linked through this website.

Speaking of the funds…Industry Workers, do not forget to file right now for your pro-rata vacation. You have until the end of May to file, but the earlier you do, the quicker you can confirm the amount of days worked and, subsequently, the total vacation pay you are entitled to receive. To file, call the union hall at (718) 392-4510. DO NOT LOSE OUT ON YOUR RIGHT TO COLLECT VACATION PAY!

LOCAL 814 STRIKES AGAIN!
In(tegrated) and OUT

Local 814 showed its might this week with informational hand-billing at an Integrated Business Solutions worksite. You will recall that Integrated is the artist formerly known as Dancker, Sellew & Douglas, who left 814 under mysterious circumstances in January 2006.

The hand-billing took place the evening of April 10 th as well as the following morning, April 11 th at Goldman Sachs’ 85 Broad Street Headquarters. President George Daniello and members of the executive board were present for both sessions with a tremendous showing from the men. With this hard work and determination, Local 814 finally got a response from Goldman higher-ups.

“We appreciate all the business Goldman Sachs gives to 814,” said President Daniello, “but we cannot allow Integrated, a runaway shop, continue to do our work and not pay the prevailing wages and benefits that we fought hard to establish. We would like to thank all who came out and showed their support. Without the rank-and-file, these efforts would be fruitless.”

President Daniello expects to hear a response from Goldman Sachs on this issue in the near future.

814 SIGNS TWO NEW COMPANIES, MEMBERSHIP CLOSING IN ON ONE THOUSAND!!!

At the beginning of September, President George Daniello successfully negotiated contracts to bring in two new companies to Local 814, BDI and WDT-North American. With the addition of these companies, 814’s membership is now at 975, which brings us ever closer back to 1,000.

 BDI- 4 members

WDT-North American- 16 members, including clerical workers, something 814 has not had in a long time

“I’m proud to have these fine companies join the 814 family,” said President George Daniello. “Along with Christie’s, this brings our organizing total to over 70 new members since February. You can rest assured that these recent victories are only the tip of the iceberg to our newfound commitment to organize the non-union competition.”

THANKS TO THE MEMBERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN 814’S BIG THREE DAY WEEKEND

The weekend of September 9th-11th was a big weekend for Local 814.

On Saturday, we participated in the 2006 Labor Day Parade. We had a great showing from the members and their families, as we carried the banner of 814 for the whole city to witness. With trucks from Central, Globe, AFD, and a spiffy looking new one from Eagle, we rolled down Fifth Ave. with great pride. We even got a special visit from Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa and Joint Council 16 President Gary LaBarbera.

Sunday brought us one of the big events in the democratic process of electing union officers: The Nominations Meeting. Needless to say it was STANDING ROOM ONLY in the basement of the Local 802 Hall. The sign in total was 110 for the meeting, and members got to witness first hand how candidates are chosen for this fall’s election. There is more info about the election on the Home Page.

Finally on Monday, which was more importantly the fifth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, we held our quarterly membership meeting at the same 802 Hall. We thank those in attendance, as we had more than enough for a quorum to hold an official meeting. An array of topics were discussed at the meeting, so please get in contact with the union or your shop steward for further information.

CHRISTIE'S ORGANIZING CAMPAIGN SUCCESSFULLY COMES TO A CLOSE

The 52 art handlers and gallery attendants at Christie's have become the newest shop represented by Teamsters Local 814. Along with Sotheby's, 814 now represents the two largest auction galleries in New York City.

After tireless effort on the part of everyone involved, and just under a year after being approached by the workers of Christie's, the new contract was ratified almost unanimously, 34-3.
Their new deal includes raises on average of 5% over the next five years, which is tremendous given that it was a first contract.

Once on board, their first order of business was to elect a shop steward to represent them within the barn.

They selected Jason Cuvelier, a __ year veteran of Christie's and member of the Wage Scale Committee. Congratulations go out to Jason, who is glad to be a member of 814.
